It’s a breakthrough for Grimes, who despite riding out countless catchy, hook driven tracks manages to stick patently by her lyrically enigmatic themes which are never quite what the surface portrays them as and instead invites the listener to dig much deeper. Art Angels is weird and wonderful and nothing short of other worldly – give those poor aliens a break, they probably just wanted to cop a physical.Ĭontrasting with Visions, Art Angels as a whole is sonically euphoric, and while not entirely your typical “feel-good” album track through track, the animated, exultant dynamic is on a much higher wavelength than the menacing themes which pulsated the majority of Visions. Although a risky and uncertain maneuver, Art Angels is a prime example of how trusting in your gut instinct always pays off no matter how much you fear it. After seeing the major Success of Visions Grimes was eager to begin rolling out the material of her next project, but after releasing 2014’s ‘Go’, a pumping EDM club tune in collaboration with close friend/producer Blood Diamonds, Boucher made the bold decision to scrap a bunch of songs she’d been working on for her forthcoming album (what turned out to be Art Angels), beginning with a clean slate after gaining a newfound perspective. Visions is sometimes unsettling, although the substance is what makes the record so important Claire revealing candid real life experiences of her own and touching a nerve which hits hard. Visions set Grimes apart from the general array of pop music humans are collectively overexposed to, with it’s experimental synth dripping sonics moulding a sci-fi trip through space, weaving tangibly in between reality and fantasy. Grimes is the multimedia project of Canadian singer/song-writer/producer/artist/director Claire Boucher, who made her entrance to the music scene in 2010, releasing two albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa with Arbutus records, before receiving critical acclaim and mainstream success with the release of her breakout third album, 2012’s Visions. Considering Grimes’ fourth album, 14 track length Art Angels, was released just one day prior, for a moment the questionable likelihood lowkey made a hell of a lot of sense. When a now confirmed missile test was launched last Saturday in South California, the state – followed suit by the rest of the world – fell into an overexposed frenzy at the slight possibility of an alien invasion.
